Books - How to Teach Your Baby to Read

How to Teach Your Baby to Read - by Glenn Doman

This is the book that started it all for me. I love this book!! Although I did not teach sight words exclusively, I learned a lot from this book. The main thing I learned was that you can teach little children (0-5) how to read, math, etc. It is actually easier to learn the younger they are. The second thing I learned was how to make learning to read fun.
We have 9 flashcards measuring 3 1/2 x 8 1/2. A single word is printed on each one in large letters. First I say the words to her for a couple of turns until she knows them. Each day we take out the oldest word add one new word. The first words I picked were: Mommy, Daddy, Hannah, Takeshi and Ernest (her brothers). The next words that I picked are out of easy reader books that Hannah will be reading (after she learns these words).

Here is a video of how to show the flashcards to teach reading. We did this a couple times and then played our "Mixed-Up Whole Words" game.

Books - How to Teach Your Baby Math

How to Teach Your Baby Math by Glenn Doman

Great book. I found the first part of the book interesting. It talks all about tiny children (0-5 years) and how they want, can and should learn math. It finally talked about how to teach your baby math starting in chapter 7. I made the dot cards, and used them for a little while, but I had a hard time keeping this program going. It's funny that I can teach my children how to read, but have such a hard time teaching such an easy math program.

Books - Let Your Baby Swim

Great (small) book that shows you how to let your baby swim. I used this on my 2nd child and it worked great!

Books - Teach Your Child to Read in 60 Days

Teach Your Child to Read in 60 Days by Sidney Ledson

Another day to day account of a father teaching his daughters to read. This is where we got the "Blocks" game from and the "Silly Sentences". I think the only thing I didn't like about this book was that he taught his girls phonetic reading (ex: leef instead of leaf). Then after he taught that, he went back and changed it to leaf. Double work I think.

Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Minutes a Day by Barbara J. Fox

This book contains (almost) all the games that I played (and play) with my kids to teach reading. They are a lot of fun and they work great!

Books - Reading and Writing Before School

Reading and Writing Before School by Felicity Hughes

This is an out of print book, but could still probably be bought on ebay. This mother also followed the "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" by Glenn Doman, as well as phonics. This is an account of this mother's day to day, step by step, process of teaching her 2 and 3 year old how to read and write.

Books - Newsweek "Your Child"

"Your Child" Birth to 3

My dad gave me this Newsweek magazine right around the time I was teaching Ernest to read. Great information on milestones, brain development and lots of other goodies.
