Easter Display

I followed Make and Takes tutorial for growing wheatgrass and love the results. Hannah was able to do most of it herself and Ernest even did one for himself. Our first attempt didn't work out well, and since I over watered (a lot!) our wheat started to grow mold instead of grass! I'm happy to say our 2nd attempt worked out much better! This is our results after 12 days. There is just something magical about plants and being able to watch something grow from a seed. The wheat is growing so fast it seems like it's noticeably taller overnight!

I love the dew drops we found on our blades of grass this morning!

Ernest started his 8th grade school year at Cortney Jr. High. For 6th and 7th grade all of Ernest's classes were Honor's classes, but this year Cortney cut out every single honors class & art! Ernest was so unhappy in school! We talked with the school office, counselors & principle to see how Ernest could be challenged, but no one had any solutions for us. The teachers (except for one) would not give Ernest harder work to do, and Clark County School District refused to let him skip a grade. We decided that homeschooling would be the best option for him. With the K12 homeschooling program Ernest can work at his own pace and at a higher level. Also, if he completes 8th grade by January, he can even start 9th grade classes.

Last week we received a computer, printer, school books, teacher guides, CD's, art supplies and a chemistry set (all for free!).

I've been helping out at the book fair all week. Ernest can now sound out almost everything! He gets discouraged if there are too many big words so I bought some easy to read books. He is so smart. I can't get over how he wants to read everything! It's amazing!!

Ernest - April 12, 2001

Ernest is 4 years old and 3 months.

Ernest knows how to add, his numbers, letters, letter sounds and the silent E. I really want to get into reading with him. He is just taking off. He tries to read EVERYTHING!! I went thru our learning materials and got out some sight words, blends and the "Magic E" game (for review). I also got out the "Silly Sentences" for us to read together.

Since there are only 2 journal entries for Ernest, I'll add one on here.

Ernest went from knowing basic phonics, basic blends and the magic E, to reading almost everything in less than a month! Ernest just naturally LOVES to read (like me) so reading came very easy to him. It took a while longer to get Takeshi reading. Takeshi is very smart also, just not a reading lover :)
